In The Image Of My Father

Have you noticed that there is always someone in the family or maybe a friend saying to the parents of a child something about how Junior looks just like his daddy? Or little Suzie resembles Grandma, Mama or Aunt Lulabelle, doesn't she? When the boys grow up enough to go behind daddy everywhere he goes, they want to mimic everything. I recall a kid in our neighborhood that had every toy tool just like his father's real tools. He followed his father all over the place. The dad could not do anything without the kid trying to copy it.

Girls were always standing underfoot in the kitchen while mom cooked. They wanted to see what she was doing and usually throwing out a barrage of questions. These days, it may not be quite the same because now the girls sometimes follow daddy and the boys want to know how to cook. There are still children doing the things father and mother do. Check out some of the things your child says or a mannerism. If it sounds or looks familiar, you know that they are picking up on those things you say and do. Some are a tad embarassing, huh?

Have you caught yourself saying or doing something that you just know your father or mother did? Possibly, you even vowed never to do that yet there you are following in the footsteps of your parent. Why is that? Because deep inside we have a need to learn from someone we trust. There are times we pick up traits we wish we hadn't. That's because the first role model we get is our parents and they are not perfect. Most of them want to do the right thing though. While it is not always true with every parent, most do have the welfare of the child uppermost in their minds. So we imitate them.

Regardless of what happened to you as you grew up, there is now a role model that is perfect in every way available to you. No, it isn't Mary Poppins! God is our Father Who has provided a wonderful model to live by. His Word is the guide to better living. If you follow in His footsteps and allow yourself to mimic Jesus, His Son, not only do you please the Father but you will find that you are walking the path of freedom. Just as the little boy goes behind his daddy while he mows the lawn or builds something, follow the Lord. Just as the little girl helps momma cook because she desires to do the things "just like Momma", follow the Lord, imitate Him, be "just like Daddy." You have been created to do just that because that is what Jesus did.

John 14:6-9, "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?"

Jesus tells Phillip that when you see Him, you see the Father. That's because Jesus did everything He saw the Father do, said everything the Father said. When we get an understanding of this, we start to walk a new way. The path becomes brighter and we know that the way is sure. Our God has provided us with a manual for living that gives us all the information we need to begin to imitate our Father. All we have to do is read it, study it, think about it. God will give the answers to all that we ask or even think. Believe it nor not, and most of us do not, the manual is written so we can understand it. Too many folks see it as hard to read or understand so they give up. It is actually quite easy once you truly want to know instead of "window shopping" as so many people try to do. It takes intense interest and a certain diligence to get what the manual has to say. That is because God intends for us to grow in Him, care about Him and accept His Son Who died for all of us if only we believe and receive. If it was really easy at first, everyone would find something else to do. No one would really stick to it. Only those who are dedicated to seeking God will continue. Those are the folks God wants in His family because they love Him.

We are made in His image.

Genesis 1:26-28, "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them,"

Why did He do that? Couldn't He just make a bunch of people out of something else? If He had done that, He could not have invited us to participate in His family. Only those of royal blood may join the family of God. What does it mean to be in God's image? People don't look alike. Everyone is different in some way. Everything God does is spiritual first. Therefore, He made mankind in His image in the spirit. Your spirit is made exactly like God. The reason you are not as powerful as God is because 1) you don't know how and 2) you would fall into the same pit satan did. He wanted to BE God. Our Father wants to teach you all He knows, not to take over His job but to enjoy His benefits, be His adopted child.

Isn't it time to act like we are made in the image of God instead of acting like we are made in the image of this sin-natured world? Come to the Lord today. Enjoy being a part of the family! I am made in the image of my Father. How about you?
